Family: Colubridae
Genus: Pantherophis
Species: Obseletus
The hognose is most known for the upturned snout or rostral scale that helps them dig in sandy soils. Depending on the Genus, they vary greatly from browns and greys to reds, greens, oranges, and black. When threatened, they will flatten their necks and raise their heads like a cobra. One of the things kids love to see is when they play dead which they will do sometimes when they sense danger.
Jena loves the tricolored hognose and of course all the grandkids love to see the occasional hood or death display.
