Family: Colubridae
Genus: Pantherophis
Species: Emoryi
The Emoryi or Great Plains Rat Snake ranges Missouri to Nebraska to Colorado and south to Texas and even down into Northern Mexico. They can reach 3' to 5' long and eat birds, rodents, lizards, frogs, and even the occasional snake. If frightened or scared they will shake their tail as a warning while still being normally non-aggressive and very calm.
One of the snakes that I love to see in the wild. Even if I don't collect them, they are always fun to see. We have a few locale specific lines as well as albinos that we work with.
